The highly iridescent inner layer of the shell of abalone has traditionally been used as a decorative item in jewelry, buttons, and as inlay in furniture and in musical instruments such as guitars, etc. The shell is also polished and sold for seashell decorating and used in shell crafts and making inlaid knife handles, tables and jewelry. Abalone is a marine snail commonly called ear shell, sea ear, and ormer.  The shell is lined with an iridescent, pearl-like layer and is used to make mother-of-pearl buttons The abalone has a broad foot with which it attaches itself to submerged rocks. It feeds on algae and seaweed.  The most common North American species are the black abalone, the green abalone, and the red abalone. They are found along the coast of California and Oregon. The abalone is harvested for its shell and edible foot from the ocean and from commercial farms that specialize in growing abalones. Abalones belong to the family Haliotidae.

All of our green abalone are commercial grade and will have natural imperfections. There will be scars from natural cuts in the backs of these shells, small indentations, chips on the edges, etc. The larger the shell, the older it is and it will have more imperfections from aging and living in the oceans. The interiors will be highly iridescent with colorful blues, greens and silver, with black accents.
