These polished white top tiger cowrie shells with purple and brown tones, Cypraea tigris, measure between approximately 2-1/2 inches and 3 inches in size. Several layers of the top of the tiger cowry shell have been removed exposing a white layer. Cowrie shells are prized by shell collectors and used in seashell decor by displaying them in baskets and glass containers. The tiger cowrie is a familiar shell to many people. This very common Indo Pacific reef species is exported to the U.S. and Europe for the tourist trade.
