Louisiana Alligator Gar Skull (Atractosteus spatula) measuring approximately 14 inches long and 4-1/2 inches wide.  The alligator gar is a heavily armored, prehistoric specimen characterized by its broad, reptile-like snout and a terrifying dual row of sharp teeth (review photos) in the upper jaw.  Their snout is short, flat and exceptionally wide.  It closely mimics the profile of an American alligator rather than the narrow, needle-like snouts of other gar species.  Composed of thick, textured and incredibly hard dermal bones.  The skull acts as an extension of the fish's impenetrable ganoid scale armor.  This skull is a popular centerpiece for oddity collectors, museums, and educators studying evolution.
